WEBVTT

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.000
BRUCE BUCKINGHAM: And here come the astronauts. We have, being led by Commander Mark Polansky,

00:00:07.000 --> 00:00:14.000
Pilot William Oefelein, Mission Specialists Nicholas Patrick, Robert Curbeam, Christer Fuglesang,

00:00:14.000 --> 00:00:21.000
Joan Higginbotham and Suni Williams.

00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:26.000
And they're getting into the astronaut van. Garrett, who else is going to be riding

00:00:26.000 --> 00:00:29.000
with them in this ride out to the launch pad?

00:00:29.000 --> 00:00:32.000
GARRETT REISMAN: Well, let's see, boarding right behind the astronauts is the chief of the astronaut office,

00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:38.000
and that's Steve Lindsey. First entering before Steve,

00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:40.000
though, is Ellen Ochoa. She's head of the flight crew operations directorate.

00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:43.000
She's Steve's boss. And lastly, getting onboard, the last blue suit you saw get onboard there

00:00:43.000 --> 00:00:47.000
is Jerry Ross, who's in charge of the Vehicle Integration Test Team.

00:00:47.000 --> 00:00:50.000
They're the team that takes care of the orbiter when it's not being flown by astronauts.

00:00:50.000 --> 00:00:56.000
BUCKINGHAM: OK. So they're getting a security escort out to the launch pad.

00:00:56.000 --> 00:01:04.000
Of course, this is a standard operation for all of our astronaut, astronaut crews,

00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:10.000
shuttle crews who go out to the launch pad. They, they get traffic stopped for them

00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:16.000
as they take this about 20-minute journey out to the pad. You can see the headlights of the,

00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:20.000
a lot of our cars, employees that, some of which are heading home for work,

00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:24.000
but I don't think there's going to be too many people going to be leaving tonight.

00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:29.000
I think with this being the first nighttime launch in over four years,

00:01:29.000 --> 00:01:34.000
there's going to be a lot of our employees hanging around to make sure that they get an eyewitness of this historic mission.

00:01:34.000 --> 00:01:41.000
REISMAN: That's right. At this point, both Ellen Ochoa and also Jerry Ross,

00:01:41.000 --> 00:01:45.000
the leader of the Vehicle Integration Test Team, will exit the Astrovan and the crew will continue on to the pad.

00:01:45.000 --> 00:01:49.000
BUCKINGHAM: And you can see it's pretty dark out there, Garrett.

00:01:49.000 --> 00:01:51.000
There aren't too many streetlights out there.

00:01:51.000 --> 00:01:54.000
REISMAN: Nope. There's not typically a lot of traffic on this road.

00:01:54.000 --> 00:02:00.000
BUCKINGHAM: No. Certainly not. The astronauts are opening the door and we can see the silhouette of

00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:07.000
them climbing out, and it looks like they're not going directly to the elevator.

00:02:07.000 --> 00:02:12.000
They're going to take a step back and look at the vehicle in all its glory.

00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:16.000
And we see, of course, lights come on to give a little illumination.

00:02:16.000 --> 00:02:19.000
But they're climbing into the, to the elevator at the ground floor that will take them up to the,

00:02:19.000 --> 00:02:26.000
like I say, the 195-foot level where they will then begin the process to get into the orbiter Discovery.

00:02:26.000 --> 00:02:30.000
