00:00:07.000 --> 00:00:12.000
By the thousands, sixth-grade students from throughout Brevard County, Florida.,

00:00:12.000 --> 00:00:19.000
recently descended upon the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex to mark the second annual Brevard Space Week.

00:00:19.000 --> 00:00:24.000
>Over 6,000 students spent a full day getting a first-hand look at what many had

00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:29.000
only seen from their backyards: the wonders of space flight.

00:00:29.000 --> 00:00:35.000
During the week-long event, 1,200 students per day were inspired by demonstrations -- a

00:00:35.000 --> 00:00:41.000
3-D IMAX movie about the Space Station -- and a veteran astronaut's account of space travel.

00:00:41.000 --> 00:00:46.000
The program was devised to show the value of space exploration and inspire the

00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:51.000
students to join in the quest by studying hard and dreaming big.

00:00:51.000 --> 00:00:54.000
Joining them was astronaut John Blaha --

00:00:54.000 --> 00:01:00.000
a veteran of six Space Shuttle flights and four months aboard the Russian Mir space station.

00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:03.000
He stressed the importance of education,

00:01:03.000 --> 00:01:10.000
shared personal experiences of living and working in space, and answered questions from the crowd.

00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:14.000
After learning about the construction of the International Space Station through a

00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:23.000
3-D IMAX movie, participants were treated to numerous demonstrations throughout the Shuttle Plaza at the complex.

00:01:23.000 --> 00:01:29.000
Other highlights included watching the Brevard County High School Robotics Team show off its creation,

00:01:29.000 --> 00:01:36.000
learning how Space Shuttle tile material resists heat, and hearing a Return to Flight briefing.

00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:45.000
Space Week is just part of a cooperative space curriculum developed by NASA, Brevard Public Schools and the Visitor Complex.

00:01:45.000 --> 00:01:50.000
It emphasizes the importance of math and science through fun space-exploration activities.

00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:55.000
All of the students were given certificates to bring their families to the Visitor Complex

00:01:55.000 --> 00:02:03.000
free of charge and play "tour guide," and demonstrating the knowledge they gained from the program.

00:02:03.000 --> 00:02:08.000
