00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:01.000

00:00:01.000 --> 00:00:08.000
George Diller/Ares I-X Commentator: This is Ares Launch Control, at T-2 hours, 27 minutes, 40 seconds and counting.

00:00:08.000 --> 00:00:13.000
And here in the Mission Director's Center we're being joined by Terry McGugin,

00:00:13.000 --> 00:00:19.000
who is the manager of parachute operations for United Space Alliance.

00:00:19.000 --> 00:00:27.000
And he has been responsible for a lot of the activity that we have seen in that video -- just,

00:00:27.000 --> 00:00:35.000
that we've just played -- that has involved with getting these chutes ready for the Ares I-X booster to fly today.

00:00:35.000 --> 00:00:42.000
And Terry, I want to first of all, can you tell us
how many, how many chutes are actually on
it?

00:00:42.000 --> 00:00:46.000
And how does it differ from the chutes that are on the shuttle?

00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:49.000
Terry McGugin/Parachute Refurbishment Facility Manager: Sure, George. I'd be glad to talk about that a little bit.

00:00:49.000 --> 00:00:54.000
Same components -- same number of components -- is on a shuttle mission.

00:00:54.000 --> 00:00:59.000
There's three main parachutes, one drogue and one pilot parachute for the Ares.

00:00:59.000 --> 00:01:05.000
They're different in construction and materials, but they're running the same purpose.

00:01:05.000 --> 00:01:10.000
And the process, once it comes in
aerodynamically and we start throwing the
parachutes,

00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:12.000
it's very similar to what we do on the shuttle missions.

00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:17.000
George Diller/Ares I-X Commentator: Now, is there any kind of a chute at all on the second stage, the upper stage? Or not?

00:01:17.000 --> 00:01:20.000
Terry McGugin/Parachute Refurbishment Facility Manager: No, not for this mission.

00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:24.000
There are parachutes that will be there on the Orion capsule eventually.

00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:29.000
But those are different parachutes then what we're doing in my shop.

00:01:29.000 --> 00:01:32.000
George Diller/Ares I-X Commentator: What's the very first chute that we're going to see?

00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:36.000
If we have a chance to see this visually, that's going to come out here this morning?

00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:37.000
Terry McGugin/Parachute Refurbishment Facility Manager: Sure, yeah.

00:01:37.000 --> 00:01:43.000
The first parachute is called the pilot parachute -- it comes out first -- and its job is basically to pull out the drogue parachute.

00:01:43.000 --> 00:01:48.000
So it immediately pulls out the drogue parachute, out of its deployment bag.

00:01:48.000 --> 00:01:55.000
The drogue parachute orients the vehicle more or less in line and gets it to where it's not tilted over too far.

00:01:55.000 --> 00:02:00.000
And then the main parachutes deploy. And
those are deployed on altitude-switch

00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:04.000
sensors that determine when these parachutes get deployed.

00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:06.000
George Diller/Ares I-X Commentator:  So,
can you give us an idea then,

00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:10.000
after the separation occurs from the upper stage and the first stage,

00:02:10.000 --> 00:02:15.000
how soon after that do we see the first chute come out? Or does it fall for awhile first?

00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:16.000
Terry McGugin/Parachute Refurbishment Facility Manager: Actually, it falls quite awhile.

00:02:16.000 --> 00:02:19.000
You don't see the parachutes until way late in the game.

00:02:19.000 --> 00:02:28.000
The booster separates from the upper stage and it goes through a tumble maneuver and then an aerodynamic re-entry.

00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:31.000
And it comes quite a ways down into the
atmosphere.

00:02:31.000 --> 00:02:39.000
I believe that these are set to go off at about 15,000 feet is where we start arming up the pilot parachute.

00:02:39.000 --> 00:02:45.000
George Diller/Ares I-X Commentator: Now, how is the retrieval by the ships different? I think it's actually the Liberty Star that's...

00:02:45.000 --> 00:02:48.000
Terry McGugin/Parachute Refurbishment Facility Manager: The Liberty is going to pick up the booster.

00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:55.000
It'll be, a lot a ways it's going to be similar to an SRB mission, but we've got a different orientation.

00:02:55.000 --> 00:03:02.000
It's a longer vehicle. It's actually a five segment booster -- course, for this mission, the fifth segment is non-functional.

00:03:02.000 --> 00:03:06.000
It's not really a motor, it's just a simulator. But, it's a longer booster,

00:03:06.000 --> 00:03:10.000
and so we have some different dynamics about how it lays in the water and stuff.

00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:16.000
But they're just going to go up and get a hold of the booster, retrieve the parachutes, get them reeled on board.

00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:20.000
Course, on this mission, we're only going to
get back the three mains.

00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:23.000
The drogue parachute stays attached to the forward skirt extension,

00:03:23.000 --> 00:03:28.000
and that does not have flotation for this test
flight -- and so we won't retrieve that.

00:03:28.000 --> 00:03:34.000
Whereas on an SRB mission for the shuttle system, we retrieve all the parachutes.

00:03:34.000 --> 00:03:39.000
George Diller/Ares I-X Commentator: Well, Terry, thank you very much. We appreciate that further explanation, and of course,

00:03:39.000 --> 00:03:44.000
the tape showing some of your team in action there getting the chutes for this mission ready to go. So...

00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:45.000
Terry McGugin/Parachute Refurbishment
Facility Manager: It's a great team, George.

00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:48.000
I had some awesome people working with me. So, thank you very much.

00:03:48.000 --> 00:03:54.000
George Diller/Ares I-X Commentator: Thank you. And we're now at T-2 hours, 23 minutes, 52 seconds and counting.

00:03:54.000 --> 00:03:56.000
This is Ares Launch Control.

00:03:56.000 --> 00:03:58.000
