WEBVTT

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:01.000

00:00:01.000 --> 00:00:05.000
GEORGE DILLER: With us here now in the Mission Director's Center is

00:00:05.000 --> 00:00:10.000
NASA launch director and the NASA launch manager for Phoenix today,

00:00:10.000 --> 00:00:17.000
Chuck Dovale. And Chuck, it, it appears to have been a very successful

00:00:17.000 --> 00:00:21.000
countdown to launch, but can you give us some specifics in how you feel

00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:22.000
about how things went?

00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:24.000
CHUCK DOVALE: Yeah, I think we can say that now, George.

00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:30.000
The count was very quiet and rather uneventful. The events really started happening

00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:35.000
once we lifted off and got downrange and had a little bit of trouble getting

00:00:35.000 --> 00:00:41.000
data back and so there was quite a bit of hand-wringing during the second

00:00:41.000 --> 00:00:46.000
burn of the second stage, and also the third stage in spacecraft separation

00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:51.000
where we didn't get data back, and we finally have gotten confirmation from

00:00:51.000 --> 00:00:56.000
the spacecraft side that they have acquired the spacecraft from their tracking

00:00:56.000 --> 00:01:02.000
station in Goldstone and it's power positive, and it's searching for the sun, so

00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:08.000
everything appears normal. But it was a little bit of anxious moments there,

00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:14.000
quite, it seemed like an eternity but it was about 20 minutes or so where we

00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:19.000
weren't sure, we were hoping Phoenix would phone home and she did. DILLER: It did.

00:01:19.000 --> 00:01:20.000
DOVALE: So we're very happy.

00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:25.000
DILLER: Alright, well that, that pretty much takes us to where, I guess,

00:01:25.000 --> 00:01:28.000
where we'll be watching over the next couple of hours to see how the state-

00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:34.000
of-health checks go on Phoenix, but Chuck, we've got another Delta on the

00:01:34.000 --> 00:01:39.000
adjacent pad. What can you tell us about the status of Dawn?

00:01:39.000 --> 00:01:44.000
DOVALE: Well, we'll be quickly moving on to Dawn. We've got a range

00:01:44.000 --> 00:01:50.000
date of Sept. 26 for that mission, so work hasn't really stopped on that. It was

00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:54.000
just minor work being accomplished. We'll bring the spacecraft back onto

00:01:54.000 --> 00:01:57.000
the launch vehicle once we're, once we ready the launch vehicle once again

00:01:57.000 --> 00:02:05.000
for that event, and we'll march down to Sept. 26 and, and wish

00:02:05.000 --> 00:02:06.000
Dawn off like we did Phoenix.

00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:10.000
DILLER: Is there a possibility that launch could move forward any, or is

00:02:10.000 --> 00:02:12.000
that pretty much going to be a firm date?

00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:16.000
DOVALE: It's, it's firm on the range now and at this point, we don't

00:02:16.000 --> 00:02:20.000
expect it to move. We're targeting Sept. 26.

00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:24.000
DILLER: Alright. Well, thank you, Chuck, and we'll look, look forward to

00:02:24.000 --> 00:02:27.000
the Dawn launch here in about a month or so. And congratulations on a very

00:02:27.000 --> 00:02:28.000
happy countdown, and good launch today.

00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:32.000
DOVALE: Thanks, George.

00:02:32.000 --> 00:02:37.000
DILLER: And that will conclude our launch coverage for the Phoenix

00:02:37.000 --> 00:02:42.000
launch this morning. Our next activity will be a Phoenix post-launch press

00:02:42.000 --> 00:02:48.000
conference at 11 a.m. Eastern time. That will be carried live on NASA TV.

00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:50.000
This is Delta launch control.

00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:54.000
