00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.000

00:00:07.000 --> 00:00:11.000
It's toured the country and the world to honor the dedication and sacrifice of Americans who

00:00:11.000 --> 00:00:13.000
have lost their lives in the line of duty.

00:00:13.000 --> 00:00:19.000
Now, the U.S. Honor Flag will pay tribute to astronauts as well when it flies aboard space shuttle Atlantis

00:00:19.000 --> 00:00:22.000
during the Space Shuttle Program's final mission.

00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:29.000
During a May 26 ceremony at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida, the flag began its journey to space.

00:00:29.000 --> 00:00:33.000
With the visitor complex's Astronaut Memorial Mirror as a backdrop,

00:00:33.000 --> 00:00:46.000
a 100-member honor guard and bagpipe procession accompanied the flag's arrival.

00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:52.000
James K. Loftus, director of the Miami-Dade Police Department, presented flag to Bob Cabana,

00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:55.000
director of NASA's Kennedy Space Center.

00:00:55.000 --> 00:01:01.000
Cabana handed over the flag to veteran astronaut Jerry Ross in preparation for its flight aboard Atlantis.

00:01:01.000 --> 00:01:04.000
The handoff was followed by a moment of silence at the memorial,

00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:08.000
which bears the names of astronauts who have died in the exploration of space.

00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:14.000
(Cabana:) "The flag honors all the first responders, military and now astronauts who've paid the

00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:17.000
ultimate price in the service of our country.

00:01:17.000 --> 00:01:23.000
And I think it's a real privilege for us to be able to take it aboard Atlantis and bring it home safe. It says a lot."

00:01:23.000 --> 00:01:27.000
Begun as a tribute following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorists' attacks,

00:01:27.000 --> 00:01:32.000
the flag flew over Ground Zero at the World Trade Center site for two weeks.

00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:36.000
Since then it's served as a traveling memorial to police officers,

00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:42.000
firefighters and military service members
who have lost their lives while serving their
communities and country.

00:01:42.000 --> 00:01:49.000
Now after visiting more than 1,000 locations
on Earth, the flag's next trip will be out of this world.

00:01:49.000 --> 00:01:51.000
