00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.000
Next on the NASA Space Shuttle Status Report:

00:00:03.000 --> 00:00:07.000
A sudden hail storm delays the launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis.

00:00:07.000 --> 00:00:11.000
Orbiter Endeavour gets ready for its first educator astronaut

00:00:11.000 --> 00:00:14.000
And Discovery gets a new improvement.

00:00:14.000 --> 00:00:19.000
The NASA Space Shuttle Status Report starts right now.

00:00:19.000 --> 00:00:29.000
Music.

00:00:29.000 --> 00:00:34.000
I'm Mark Ross, NASA test director, and this is the NASA Space Shuttle Status Report.

00:00:34.000 --> 00:00:40.000
Space Shuttle Atlantis is back inside NASA's Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:45.000
A sudden hail storm over Kennedy Space Center damaged the external tank on February 26

00:00:45.000 --> 00:00:51.000
requiring Atlantis to return to the 52-story building for a closer inspection and repairs.

00:00:51.000 --> 00:00:56.000
At a flight readiness review, mission managers unanimously decided to proceed with

00:00:56.000 --> 00:01:00.000
the STS-117 mission, pending the necessary repairs.

00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:04.000
The next launch window for Space Shuttle Atlantis is late April.

00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:11.000
The STS-117 crew performed a mock countdown training exercise at Kennedy Space Center in late February.

00:01:11.000 --> 00:01:17.000
The astronauts are now back in Houston for more training exercises in preparation for their mission.

00:01:17.000 --> 00:01:21.000
Meanwhile, NASA is also working on preparing for several other flights this year.

00:01:21.000 --> 00:01:29.000
One of those flights is mission STS-118 aboard orbiter Endeavour, slated to fly this summer.

00:01:29.000 --> 00:01:33.000
Endeavour is inside Orbiter Processing Facility Bay 2 where technicians have

00:01:33.000 --> 00:01:36.000
equipped the vehicle with extensive safety modifications.

00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:43.000
In addition, its three space shuttle main engines are in place and thermal protection tile work is nearly complete.

00:01:43.000 --> 00:01:48.000
The Endeavour crew will continue the extraordinary task of assembling the International Space Station.

00:01:48.000 --> 00:01:55.000
In addition to delivering the starboard 5 truss segment and the external stowage platform 3 to the station,

00:01:55.000 --> 00:02:01.000
this will be the first time Endeavour will fly an educator astronaut, mission specialist Barbara Morgan.

00:02:01.000 --> 00:02:11.000
An Educator Astronaut is a fully qualified astronaut with expertise in educating kindergarten through 12th grade students.

00:02:11.000 --> 00:02:18.000
Orbiter Discovery is getting a new feature! Workers are installing the station to shuttle power transfer system on Discovery.

00:02:18.000 --> 00:02:24.000
The system will provide extra power to the shuttle so it can stay docked to the station for longer periods of time.

00:02:24.000 --> 00:02:27.000
Discovery is scheduled to fly this Fall.

00:02:27.000 --> 00:02:30.000
That wraps up this week's Space Shuttle Status Report.
