00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.000
Music.

00:00:07.000 --> 00:00:12.000
Under the stewardship of the U.S. Air Force, the lighthouse that has graced

00:00:12.000 --> 00:00:21.000
Cape Canaveral's shore for more than 100 years has entered a new chapter in its long history.

00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:25.000
After a year of work, the restored and repainted structure was once again

00:00:25.000 --> 00:00:31.000
topped with its crowning glory -- its beacon, lantern room and roof.

00:00:31.000 --> 00:00:35.000
The optic, or the light, owned and operated by the U.S. Coast Guard --

00:00:35.000 --> 00:00:38.000
was sent for maintenance during the refurbishment project.

00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:48.000
Once the beacon was back in place, it was time to reinstall the 18,000-pound lantern room.

00:00:48.000 --> 00:00:53.000
Completely restored -- and once again topped with its original brass roof --

00:00:53.000 --> 00:00:58.000
the lantern room was carefully lifted by a crane to the top of the tower.

00:00:58.000 --> 00:01:03.000
The repairs were necessary because of normal weathering over many years in the coastal location

00:01:03.000 --> 00:01:10.000
that was heightened by hurricane damage from the 2004 season.

00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:15.000
The Air Force, Coast Guard and Cape Canaveral Lighthouse Foundation will conduct a

00:01:15.000 --> 00:01:27.000
relighting ceremony so that once again, the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse can serve as an active aid to navigation.

00:01:27.000 --> 00:01:32.000
