Intro music.

00:00:09.000 --> 00:00:13.000
Long before it had a name, Cape Canaveral was an important landmark

00:00:13.000 --> 00:00:18.000
appearing on navigational charts since the early 1500s.

00:00:18.000 --> 00:00:21.000
And long before the point of land was dotted by launch gantries

00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:26.000
that send rockets skyward, another tower dominated the landscape.

00:00:26.000 --> 00:00:30.000
Now this oldest standing structure -- the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse --

00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:36.000
is undergoing a restoration project to restore it to its former glory.

00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:41.000
Owned by the U.S. Air Force, the lighthouse refurbishment began in dramatic fashion.

00:00:41.000 --> 00:00:47.000
"We're getting ready to remove the lamp room from the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse.

00:00:47.000 --> 00:00:54.000
The last time that we believe that this lamp room was removed, or bolted if you will,

00:00:54.000 --> 00:00:59.000
was in 1894 whenever it was moved to this position. We're going to send it off

00:00:59.000 --> 00:01:06.000
for complete refurbishment and a change of the cupola. The very top of the lighthouse is not the original.

00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:13.000
The original now is up at Oak Hill at the contractor's plant and whenever it comes back

00:01:13.000 --> 00:01:19.000
after refurbishment the original top will be on the lighthouse."

00:01:19.000 --> 00:01:24.000
Normal exposure to the elements and the 2004 hurricane season took their toll

00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:29.000
on the structure that has aided mariners since 1868.

00:01:29.000 --> 00:01:35.000
Among other effects, the hurricanes caused significant damage to the distinctive "daymark" --

00:01:35.000 --> 00:01:40.000
the black-and-white painted horizontal stripes that identify the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse.

00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:47.000
"We're going to do a complete paint from the outside. If you notice at the top of the lighthouse now,

00:01:47.000 --> 00:01:53.000
you'll see a gallery, hand rails, and walk way. Much of that is going to be replaced.

00:01:53.000 --> 00:02:00.000
The paint will be completely removed. All pits will be sealed,

00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:06.000
weep holes will be opened and the lighthouse will be repainted."

00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:11.000
The current restoration is just the beginning of things to come from a long-term partnership

00:02:11.000 --> 00:02:17.000
between the Air Force and the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse Foundation.

00:02:17.000 --> 00:02:29.000
"What we're hoping is to be able to complete the complex. The lighthouse was formerly surrounded by several buildings,

00:02:29.000 --> 00:02:38.000
mainly the keeper's cottage and two assistant keepers' cottages. The foundation is hoping to restore

00:02:38.000 --> 00:02:47.000
those to the property so that the public can view what it was like during the turn of the century.

00:02:47.000 --> 00:02:54.000
We also hope to be able to set up an educational center so that generations

00:02:54.000 --> 00:03:01.000
can see what was happening here at the lighthouse and at Cape Canaveral."

00:03:01.000 --> 00:03:04.000
Thanks to these efforts, the historic Cape Canaveral Lighthouse

00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:16.000
will continue to shine across the waters of the coastal Atlantic.

00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:21.000
