WEBVTT

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:02.000

00:00:02.000 --> 00:00:06.000
GEORGE DILLER: Well, we're going now from the astronaut quarters into the suitup room.

00:00:06.000 --> 00:00:11.000
So tell us who we're seeing and what they're doing.

00:00:11.000 --> 00:00:13.000
PATRICK FORRESTER: Well, that's the commander, Steve Frick.

00:00:13.000 --> 00:00:16.000
He's a Navy captain and the fact that he's in there, and there's the pilot,

00:00:16.000 --> 00:00:20.000
Al Poindexter, also a Navy captain, means that the weather brief is over.

00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:23.000
While some of the other M.S.'s were getting suited up in here,

00:00:23.000 --> 00:00:27.000
the pilot and commander and sometimes the M.S., too, will be in there getting a weather briefing.

00:00:27.000 --> 00:00:30.000
There's Al giving us a wave and a thumbs up.

00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:34.000
This is his first flight. I know he's excited. There's Leland Melvin.

00:00:34.000 --> 00:00:38.000
He's on the telephone, looks like, probably saying hi to friends or family.

00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:46.000
This is his first flight also. Now they've been in these suits several times, obviously,

00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:51.000
through training, and then their actual launch suit, they've done some pressure checks and

00:00:51.000 --> 00:00:57.000
actual suit fits prior to today just to make sure things are as they should be.

00:00:57.000 --> 00:01:02.000
And then today they'll get that last check before heading out to the pad. There's Stan Love.

00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:06.000
This is his first flight also. We do have some new fliers.

00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:10.000
He's a Ph. D. in astronomy. He's from Oregon.

00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:24.000
He's a great guy and he'll be doing the third spacewalk while he's up there.

00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:28.000
There's Hans Schlegel from ESA. He's from Germany.

00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:32.000
Looks like he's already completed his checks and he's sitting there on cooling.

00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:42.000
This will be his second flight. He flew on D2 I think back in 1993 and he'll be doing two of the spacewalks.

00:01:42.000 --> 00:01:50.000
There's Leo Eyharts. He's a general in the French air force and this is his second flight.

00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:56.000
It's his first shuttle flight. He went up to Mir back in '98. And there's Rex.

00:01:56.000 --> 00:02:01.000
This is Rex's second flight. Matter of fact, he flew with Steve Frick, the commander.

00:02:01.000 --> 00:02:03.000
This is both their second flight and they flew together on

00:02:03.000 --> 00:02:08.000
STS-110. Rex is an Air Force colonel and he's the lead spacewalker on this mission.

00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:12.000
He'll be doing all three spacewalks. And here they come.

00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:16.000
This is actually coming out of the suitup room in crew quarters and you see,

00:02:16.000 --> 00:02:19.000
there Commander Steve Frick on the right. There's Al Poindexter,

00:02:19.000 --> 00:02:23.000
the rest of the crew coming in; this is their chance to see bye to the folks in crew quarters.

00:02:23.000 --> 00:02:28.000
There they are, that's all the support personnel that have taken great care of

00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:33.000
them over the last couple of days. And then we also saw Steve Lindsey in the blue flight suit.

00:02:33.000 --> 00:02:40.000
There's Brent Jett, kind of in the left rear in the coat and tie. He's the head of flight crew operations.

00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:44.000
And they'll head down the elevator, and once they come out the other side,

00:02:44.000 --> 00:03:25.000
we'll just kind of watch and let them greet the crowd out there.

00:03:25.000 --> 00:03:32.000
DILLER: Well, they're getting onboard the Astrovan and that's about,

00:03:32.000 --> 00:03:36.000
what is it, 20 minutes or so out to the pad?

00:03:36.000 --> 00:03:37.000
FORRESTER: It's probably about that.

00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:42.000
They have a police escort and you'll probably see helicopters above them with SWAT security.

00:03:42.000 --> 00:03:47.000
And they usually get them out there a little quicker than if you and I were driving.

00:03:47.000 --> 00:03:52.000
It's not a bad ride at all. They do have cooling for their suits inside the Astrovan.

00:03:52.000 --> 00:03:58.000
They tend to get a last drink of water on there. It's a pretty exciting ride.

00:03:58.000 --> 00:04:06.000
DILLER: There they go. Well, we'll pick up with them again at the launch pad and hopefully

00:04:06.000 --> 00:04:11.000
we'll be able to follow them some as they're on the way out there.

00:04:11.000 --> 00:04:13.000
